French Navy Falcon 20 Gardian 80 arrived in Wellington 28 July from Noumea. It flew onto Auckland 29 July and home to Noumea 30 July.
Gardian prepares to depart Wellington 29 July.
Royal Australian Air Force Airbus A330MRTT A39-003 spent a couple of hours at Auckland 30 July arriving from Amberley and departing direct to Joint Base Lewis-McChord as ASY607, carrying NZDF personnel to exercise "Mobility Guardian" being held in Seattle.

RNZAF Lockheed C130 Hercules NZ7005 departed Whenuapai 28 July destined for Apia as KIW613 so its most likely this aircraft is the one destined for the exercise. On the same day, NZ7003 as KIW276 flew from Suva to Canberra then home to Whenuapai.

Another low profile United States Air Force visitor turned up at Whenuapai 29 July when Boeing C32B 00-9001 arrived from Kona and Pago Pago as "JUNE23". The second visit this month by such a machine. It departed for Richmond 31 July.

Military Exercise Confirmed

After weeks of speculation, The NZ Government announced 02 August the intention for 6 General Dynamic F16D+ Fighting Falcons from the Republic of Singapore Air Force will be deployed to RNZAF Base Ohakea for a training exercise running from 30 August through until 25 September. In conjunction with the deployment, approximately 110 personnel will also head to Ohakea along with Lockheed C130 Hercules.

Official press release can be found HERE

The visit by two McDonnell Douglas F15SG's and support crew to Ohakea in February this year was a precursor to this exercise and a planned full-time presence at Ohakea as mentioned in the press release.

Of the 62 F16 Fighting Falcons operated by the RSAF, 20 are based at Changi (East) with 145 Squadron while 28 are based at Tengah with the 140 and 143 Squadrons. Another 14 F16's are based at Luke Air Force Base, Phoenix/AZ.

Presumably the examples destined for the NZ exercise are from 145 Squadron given they are the only D versions : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/145_Squadron,_Republic_of_Singapore_Air_Force

The proliferation of free, online flight tracking websites such as flightradar24 has seen the aviation community embrace the technology to expand their ability to promote and advertise.

Boeing took the opportunity over an 18 hour period spanning 02/03 August (local USA dates) to fly a Boeing 787-8 registered N7874 to "draw" an outline of the Dreamliner across a large swath of the continental United States.

Not a bad effort!

In August 2015 Boeing flew a 747-8 to create a massive 12 across the western United States

Air New Zealand 100% owned subsidiary Mt Cook Airline has taken delivery of its 16th -600 series ATR72 with the arrival at Christchurch 03 August of ZK-MVP MSN 1444. The 68 seat turbo-prop was delivered by Southern Cross International who flew the aircraft under the callsign SXI1734 routing from Toulouse via Alexandria/Egypt, Al Ain, Nagpur, Subang, Bali, Darwin and finally Brisbane.

Incredible to think it is over 4 1/2 years since Mt Cook took delivery of their first -600, ZK-MVA! The All Black ATR first flew on 23 October 2012 and entered service 15 November 2012.

A 17th -600, ZK-MVQ MSN 1451, is set for delivery in early September.

Foreigners at Ardmore

Auckland's general aviation field of Ardmore is host to a gaggle of foreign registered aircraft - some locals and others visiting.

Residents on the field include Cessna 510 Mustang N890LG. Operated by Brookby Quarries Ltd, the Mustang flies a few times per month generally heading to the South Island's West Coast and it replaced an older Citation Mustang ZK-YDZ which had in turn replaced a King Air C90GTi N890LG.

Cessna 210 Centurion"Silver Eagle"N526CH is a Rolls Royce turbine engine powered rocket machine which has lived at Ardmore under private ownership for a number of years now.
Silver Eagle N526CH departed immediately after the Mustang heading to New Plymouth.
Quest Aircraft Kodiak amphibian N181KQ arrived in the country earlier this month and is now "stored" at Ardmore for an unknown duration. It was briefly hangared however has been domiciled outside again while the NZ Warbirds Association juggle their fleet during hangar floor painting!
N181KQ parked outside the hangar that houses fellow amphibs DHC Beaver ZK-WKA and Cessna 206 N26NZ along with a handful of conventional aircraft.
Cessna T240 N362CS has been in New Zealand since mid March this year and seems to have taken up residence at Ardmore.
The Cessna TTx N362CS rests in the winter sun.
Diamond DA62 VH-DNU is back at Ardmore having spent a couple of days in Hamilton last week while resident Cessna 206 amphib N26NZ was tucked away in its hangar.

Mentioned in a blog post last month was the existence of two retired Virgin ATR72-500's parked at Nelson for end of lease maintenance with Air New Zealand Regional Maintenance.

Thanks to Terry Hodges for the accompanying photos showing the two aircraft now in a state of storage indicating they may well be a feature at Nelson for an extended period.

Cessna's parent company Textron continue to dispatch aircraft to Australasia on demonstrator tours and 01 August saw the arrival at Auckland from Brisbane of 2015 edition Sovereign+ N578AB. The jet, registered to Textron but most recently operated by Black Magic Flight Ops LLC, had arrived at Brisbane from Singapore/Seletar via Darwin 29 July and conducted a trip to Brisbane West Wellcamp, Hamilton Island, back to Wellcamp and onto Brisbane 30 July. It seems demo flights were conducted from/to Brisbane 31 July.

The jet's NZ visit was brief with it departing Auckland 03 August destined for Sydney. The next day it flew to Essendon, conducted a demonstration flight, then returned to Sydney.

Arriving Auckland 01 August.

The identity of Pacific Jets new aircraft can now be revealed following its addition to the NZ civil aircraft register on the 1st day of August. Falcon 2000LX EASy N157AL MSN 110 has taken up the registration ZK-OCB as previously worn by the Citationjet CJ4 which became N109CA in early July.  https://www.aso.com/listings/spec/ViewAd.aspx?id=170103

The Falcon arrived at Hawaii's Kailua-Kona airport 04 August (local date) from Grand Junction/CO via a techstop at Oakland/CA and continued to Apia, Western Samoa arriving 06 August. From there it made the journey to its new home of Auckland arriving just before 1300 07 August.

This airframe was produced in 2007 and started out life as F-WWBG before becoming VP-BAK with STC Corp in May 2007. It remained with the same operator but adopted a new registration of convenience becoming M-STCO on 23 July 2008. It was cancelled on 28 November 2012 to make way for a new Falcon 2000 and was registered the same day as N157AL with AML Leasing of Van Nuys, California.

If my memory serves me correctly, the last Dassault Falcon to be on the NZ register was a 200 series ZK-MAY MSN 505, operated by Moana Airlines on behalf of owners Goodman Fielder Watties based out of Nelson (and later Australia) from April 1987 until September 1990 when, while still with the owners, became VH-NGF. Goodman's also operated a Falcon 10 ZK-MAZ MSN 213 from April 1988 until July 1990.

Other Falcons to have operated in NZ include Falcon 900 examples by Brierley Investments, namely N42FJ MSN 42 and later N104FJ MSN 104. Auckland is home to Business Jets Falcon 900EX N146EX and this aircraft once shared hangar space with Falcon 2000 N185G flown by Network Jets from May 2007 until October 2007 when the owner was between aircraft deliveries and then another Falcon 2000 N818BH from September 2012 until 01 October 2014 when it was effectively replaced by Gulfstream G650 N650AB.

Post from 25 June 2017:

Auckland-based Pacific Jets, operating since 2003, has farewelled Citationjet CJ4 ZK-OCB with the Cessna departing Auckland for Honiara and Guam 15 June 2017 and then to Sapporo, Japan 16 June 2017. On 18 June 2017 the CJ4 was heard via Live ATC arriving at Anchorage and appears to have crossed the northern Pacific from Petropavlovsk, Russia. It continued to Grand Junction, Colorado arriving 19 June local date.
Arriving in Auckland 27 October 2015.

The CJ4 was re-registered from ZK-PGA/3 back in October 2015 having been delivered, brand new, in November 2012.
Arriving in Auckland 02 February 2015.
Looking at the operator's website, http://www.pacificjets.co.nz/, they have a Falcon 2000LX replacing the CJ4 so we will look forward to welcoming the new comer to our region in the not to distant future.

Qantas Airbus A330's are now a common sight through Auckland following the cessation of the Emirates Airbus A380 service from/to Sydney and now operated by Airbus A330-200's flying twice daily between the two cities. However 07 August 2017 saw the middle of the day Sydney-Auckland-Sydney QF143/146 run operated by Airbus A330-300 VH-QPJ wearing the airline's latest livery and then some!

VH-QPJ was the first aircraft in the Qantas fleet to be adorned with the "refreshed" livery and the repaint was conducted at Victorville/CA from where it returned to Sydney via Kona/HI in October last year. In early February the jet's livery was further modified to celebrate the airline's association with the famous LGBT Sydney Mardi Gras event.

In late July we mentioned a couple of general aviation aircraft crossing the Tasman Sea

Two more light aircraft have made their way to New Zealand in the shape of Piper PA32R-300 VH-HOK and Cessna 172P VH-BFQ (pictured). The two aircraft met up at the Gold Coast airport 02 August before departing the next morning for Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. Then onto Kerikeri and New Plymouth 04 August before the final leg to Wanaka 05 August.

Arriving to a blustery Auckland afternoon 11 August was the 2011 edition Cessna 182T Skylane VH-JSQ MSN 182-82307. Most recently registered to a Geelong/VIC address and delivered to Australia in January 2012, VH-JSQ made the journey from Moorabbin to Lilydale and Port Macquarie 08 August, then onto Lord Howe Island 09 August, Norfolk Island 10 August then through to Auckland and Kapiti Coast/Paraparaumu 11 August.

ZK-NUC ex VH-UUC
ZK-NUU ex VH-NUU
ZK-OEM ex VH-EEM
ZK-RQY ex VH-RQY

Airwork Flight Operations Boeing 737-476(SF) ZK-JTQ is normally domiciled in Australia flying on behalf of Toll Freight, wearing its prime contractor's colour scheme. However it has spent the last two months domiciled in New Zealand conducting domestic freight operations on behalf of Parcel Air while one of their Boeing 737's has been out of service on extended maintenance.

ZK-JTQ arrived in Auckland from Brisbane on 14 May 2017 as "Toll Freight 1" and exited the country from Auckland on 12 August 2017 returning to Brisbane as TFR902. It was straight back into scheduled operations flying on behalf of Pacific Air Express with a return trip to Port Moresby and back on 13 August.

With ZK-JTQ back in Australia, fellow Toll freighter Boeing 737-3S1 (SF) ZK-TLE departed Brisbane 12 August for Darwin and Singapore/Seletar as TFR900, presumably for maintenance.

Burley Aviation's Piper PA42-4000LS VH-BUR, operating on behalf of the NZ Airways Corporation, arrived in Christchurch 12 August from Sydney/Bankstown via a techstop on Lord Howe Island using the callsign "Aircorp One". The high performance twin has been a regular visitor to our shores for several years now conducting calibration duties on behalf of the air services provider.
Gotta love those props! VH-BUR snapped during its brief Lord Howe Island layover.

Having recently been noted listed for sale is the 2004 edition Pacific Aerospace 750XL VH-XLS MSN105. It arrived in Kerikeri 14 August from Norfolk Island having made the journey from Port Macquarie to Lord Howe and Norfolk Island two days earlier. After clearing formalities in the Far North, VH-XLS was next noted arriving at Tauranga the same day.

This airframe was first registered ZK-JPV and made its first flight on 31 March 2004 before departing the country from Kerikeri 07 April the same year destined for Norfolk Island and all stops to its new home of Nagamie/VIC on delivery to the parachute company for which it still wears its name.

Interesting to have a 750XL "imported" to NZ meanwhile a large number of new airframes await export from Hamilton.

Samoa Airways, set to begin operations in November this year, has reached an arrangement with Icelandair Group to lease a Boeing 737 however a quick online search clearly shows the carrier does not actually have the type in their inventory, so perhaps we will see an ex Air New Zealand Boeing 767-300 on the run!

The announcement, made 17 August by the Samoan Prime Minister, said the airline would start with one aircraft flying from Apia to Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney and stated the three routes fitted perfectly into the airline's partnership with Fiji Airways.

The decade long agreement between Virgin Australia and the Samoan Government to provide air services to the island nation operating as Virgin Samoa will conclude in the middle of November this year. The joint venture is being terminated at the request of the Government who have been behind the reinvention of Polynesian Airlines to establish a national flag carrier.
